Acupuncture For Neuropathy

By Dawn Furfaro

Neuropathy can feel like your world is slowly shrinking

It starts subtly – maybe a little numbness in your toes, a tingling in your fingers, or a sense that your balance just isn’t what it used to be. But over time, it can become something much bigger: pain that won’t let up, feet that don’t feel steady on the ground, hands that struggle with simple tasks, and a growing fear of falling or losing independence.

If you or someone you love is living with neuropathy, you know how discouraging it can be. Many people are told to “manage it” rather than truly expect improvement.

But we see something different every day.

We see people making huge improvements to their pain, balance, and overall functioning.

The Body Is Capable of Change

Neuropathy—whether from diabetes, chemotherapy, injury, or unknown causes—affects the nerves, but it also affects circulation, inflammation, and how the brain communicates with the body.

That’s why a one-size-fits-all approach often falls short.

At Family Acupuncture Maryland (FAM), we take an integrative approach that looks at the whole picture: supporting nerve health, improving blood flow, calming inflammation, and helping the body reconnect pathways that may have gone quiet.

And when those systems begin to shift, something powerful can happen.

Sensation can return.

Balance can improve.

Pain can ease.

Fred’s Story: Finding His Feet Again

Last year, Fred, from Clarksville MD, fell three times while doing normal daily activities. Because of his neuropathy, he didn’t have a good sense of balance or where the ground was. He fell doing simple things like stepping off a curb, and reaching out to hand the trash man a bottle of water. (He’s that kind of caring guy!)

Each fall left its mark – broken bones, shaken confidence, and a growing fear of moving freely. Peripheral neuropathy had taken away his sense of stability, and with it, a sense of safety in his own body.

When Fred started care with us, his goal was simple but profound: he wanted to feel steady again.

Over time, we worked on restoring communication between his nerves and muscles, improving circulation to his lower extremities, and supporting his overall resilience.

The changes didn’t happen overnight – but they did happen.

Today, Fred moves with significantly more balance and steadiness. He hasn’t fallen again and the fear that once dictated his movements has softened. He’s regained not just physical stability, but confidence in his body again.

Laura’s Story: Warmth, Sensation, and a Return to Life

After chemotherapy, Laura from Ellicott City was left with peripheral neuropathy in both her hands and feet.

Winters were especially hard. Her feet would turn purple from the cold, a visible reminder of how much circulation and nerve function had been compromised. Everyday tasks felt frustrating. Fine motor skills were unreliable. The discomfort was constant.

Her neighbor Emily had been seeing us for stress and issues stemming from inflammation, while her daughter was coming to rebuild immunity and strength after chemo for childhood cancer. When Emily heard about Laura’s struggle, she told her to call us for help.

When she came to us, Laura wanted her life back.

Through a personalized, integrative plan, we focused on improving circulation, supporting nerve repair, and helping her body regulate temperature and sensation more effectively.

This past winter marked something remarkable happened:

For the first time in years, Laura’s feet stayed warm.

No purple discoloration and numbness.

No constant discomfort.

No limitations holding her back.

Today, Laura is back to full functioning—using her hands with ease, moving comfortably, and living without the daily reminders of neuropathy that once defined her life.

What Healing Can Look Like

Neuropathy doesn’t always disappear overnight. But meaningful change is absolutely possible.

We regularly see patients experience:

  • Improved sensation in hands and feet
  • Better balance and reduced fall risk
  • Decreased pain, burning, tingling, and numbness
  • Warmer extremities and improved circulation
  • Greater confidence in movement and daily life

These aren’t small wins—they’re life-changing shifts.

A Different Kind of Support

Our work isn’t about masking symptoms or offering temporary relief. It’s about helping your body function better, so you can feel better—consistently and sustainably.

We combine multiple therapies and perspectives to create a plan tailored specifically to you, your history, and your goals. Every step is designed to move you toward greater stability, comfort, and connection within your body.

There Is Hope

If you’ve been told there’s nothing more to do, or if you’ve started to accept neuropathy as your “new normal,” we want you to know:

There may be more possible than you’ve been led to believe.

Fred found his balance again.

Laura got her life and her winters back.

And we would be honored to help you write your own story of recovery.
